With effect from Sunday, the military will be mobilised to assist the police in ensuring that the public complies with the Movement Control Order and stays put at home as part of efforts to contain COVID-19.

Senior Minister (Security Cluster) Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri Yaakob said that the government is confident that with the military assisting with movement control, the order will be implemented effectively.

“We hope the people will show a better compliance of the order,” said Ismail Sabri who is also the Defence Minister at a press conference after a special ministerial committee meeting on the Movement Control Order, held here today.

He said the military was being mobilised by virtue of section 5 of the Prevention and Control of Infectious Diseases Act 1988, which enables the Health Minister to authorise any agency to implement a relevant order.

At the same time, the police will continue with their monitoring activities at roadblocks. So far, occupants in some 11,000 vehicles have been stopped and questioned. -- BERNAMA
