Bersih 2.0 chairperson, Maria Chin Abdullah will be charged for the offence of organising the Bersih 4 rally for two consecutive days in August.

The matter was confirmed by Bersih 2.0 Secretariat, Mandeep Singh through his Twitter account.

According to Mandeep, Maria will be charged under Section 9 (5) Peaceful Assembly Act 2012 on November 3 at the Kuala Lumpur High Court.

In a WhatsApp message to Astro AWANI, Maria described the move as "appalling and disgusting".

Bersih 4 -- held on August 29 and concluded at midnight of August 30 -- was the fourth rally organised by Bersih 2.0 in the space of eight years.

Among Bersih 4’s demands included a fair and free general election, a transparent government, rights to demonstrate, strengthen parliamentary democracy system and saving the country’s economy.

On August 28, police had categorised Bersih 4 as illegal following the organisers’ failure to seek the truth from premises’ owners to obtain the permission to use the location.

The police later said that those who had joined the rally would be charged under the Peaceful Assembly Act 2012.
