Tan Sri Pandikar Amin Mulia revealed that former prime minister, Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad had suggested to him to resign from his post as Dewan Rakyat Speaker.

In a news conference today, Pandikar Amin said Dr Mahathir made the suggestion when he met the former premier at Yayasan Al-Bukhari on March 13.

Pandikar Amin admitted that he had also shared his unhappiness at work and expressed the desire to resign from his position.

"I was pouring my heart out to Tun M like a son to his father. But maybe, he was too engrossed in trying to bring down Najib that he suggested that I resign," he told reporters at his official residence.

He said Dr Mahathir had breached the "ethical duty of confidentiality between individuals in discussion" when the latter made the statement at an event yesterday.

On Monday, Dr Mahathir had said Pandikar Amin had sought his counsel on his own accord.

"He said he was no longer the Speaker. That was what he told me," Dr Mahathir said at the launch of his book 'Dr Mahathir’s Selected Letters to World Leaders' at the Perdana Leadership.

"After that he asked me what he should do. I said, if he wanted to resign, then resign. I believed he said he had already given Najib a letter saying he wanted to resign," Dr Mahathir had said.

Meanwhile, Pandikar Amin said Dr Mahathir had brought shame upon himself for revealing what had transpired and discussed between them at the meeting.

"I apologise if I had hurt Tun M's feelings. I didn't mean to embarrass him. But to me, he had embarrassed himself after breaching the ethics and revealing what we discussed," he added.
