Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak and wife Datin Seri Rosmah Mansor today broke their fast with a few thousand city dwellers at Dataran Merdeka at the Iftar@KL 2017 programme.

Najib, who sat cross-legged on a mat on Jalan Raja in front of the iconic Sultan Abdul Samad Building and next to Dataran Merdeka, ate 'nasi beriani' from a pack other than 'bubur lambuk' (savoury rice porridge) and dates.

During the event, Najib who was clad in red 'baju Melayu', also distributed packs of 'bubur lambuk' to many among the crowd.



He then joined the congregation in performing Maghrib prayer at the field (Dataran Merdeka) led by Sheikh Mohd Idris Al-Masyrafi from Makkah.

Also present were Federal Territories Minister Datuk Seri Tengku Adnan Tengku Mansor and Minister in the Prime Minister''s Department Datuk Seri Jamil Khir Baharom.

Iftar@KL 2017 is held every Saturday and Sunday during Ramadan in Jalan Raja starting yesterday and the last will be on June 18.

The programme has 16 activities carried out with the help of 300 volunteers and these include Quran reading, Quran interpretation clinic, Ramadan talks, setting up of zakat (tithe) collection counters, food truck operations, Islamic tourism exhibition and Ramadan concert.

The programme, held since 2012 and organised by the Tourism and Culture Ministry and National Culture and Arts Department, not only involves open events but also Maghrib, Isyak and Tarawih prayers.

Foreign tourists too were seen taking advantage of the event to feel the experience of ''breaking fast'' at the iconic site.
