A trailer lorry driver has been detained to facilitate investigations into a crash in which six in a family were killed at the 258.8km East Coast Highway 2 (LPT2) near the Perasing rest area here yesterday.

Kemaman police chief Supt Mohd Said Ibrahim said the 35-year-old driver's urine tested negative for drugs and the suspect's blood sample was sent to the state chemistry department to assist in investigations.

"Moments after the accident, we held him in custody to record a statement before releasing him on police bail about noon today," he told Bernama here today.

Yesterday, the six were killed when the Toyota Camry they were travelling in, skidded and went under the trailer which was parked in the emergency lane.

In the crash about 12.30pm, Azaman Ramli, 49, wife, Noor Akmal Mohd Zain, 48, sons, Aliff Hateem, 16 and Akliff Hakim, 12, step-daughter Noor Amira Syahirah Alias, 22, and adopted son, Aqeel Muslim Abdullah, three, succumbed to severe head and body injuries.

The victims were on the way from Kuala Terengganu to Kuantan before the car driven by Azaman was believed to have skidded and crashed into the trailer which had stopped in the emergency lane.

In KUALA TERENGGANU, the six victims were laid to rest early today.

The bodies of Azaman Ramli and sons, Aliff Hateem and Aliff Hakim were buried at the Muslim cemetery in Kampung Raja Baram Chendering about 3am.
