The Road Transport Department (JPJ) will conduct a special operation on number plates and the use of strobe lights on vehicles in nationwide beginning Oct 1.

Its director general, Datuk Seri Ismail Ahmad said the first phase of the operations will be held for a month while the second will begin on Nov 1.

During the first phase, the JPJ would issue a warning, reminder and advice to road users as well as show the correct use of number plates.

No summonses would be issued to road users during this phase who had violated the law.

He said pamphlets on the correct specifications for number plates would also be issued during the operations.

However, beginning Nov 1, road users who break the law would be issued a fine of not more than RM300.

Ismail said last year, there were 6,915 deaths from road accidents.

"Enforcement is one way to reduce deaths on the roads and we are targeting that by 2020, the figure to go down to 5,300."
