The youth generation or Gen Y in the country should move beyond the geographical boundaries to create greater networking within the ASEAN region, said Youth and Sports Minister Khairy Jamaluddin.

Citing the ASEAN Youth Leaders’ Summit which was held in conjunction with the just concluded 26th ASEAN Summit hosted by Malaysia, he said the summit which gathered almost 300 young Asean leaders including its dialogue partners such as the United States, China and South Korea, saw all of them united as one team to come up with a better solution for problems arising.

"One thing that struck me was the young people from Indonesia, Cambodia, Myanmar, Laos and all the ASEAN region as well as our dialogue partners are facing similar challenges related to their nations such as education and etc," Khairy said.

He said this during his keynote address at UCSI Scholars' Circle (U-Schos) Rise Up with the Leaders themed 'Youth Beyond Boundaries' organised by the UCSI University, here, Monday.

U-Schos is made up of scholarship awardees of the University's trust.

"All of this (education and etc) are the common things among the young people across the region and we must think among ourselves the solutions that not only benefited ourselves within the society but also could be applied across the (ASEAN) region," Khairy added.

In another note, he emphasized that the young leaders need to inculcate among themselves to reach their goals.

The criteria is always thinking about long term planning, accepting criticism to improve, focus on what field they can control and leaning which means to rest against or on something for support.

U-Schos Rise Up with the Leaders is an ongoing talk series aimed to inculcate strong leadership values among young leaders in UCSI University and the country, therefore inspiring them to be successful leaders of the nation.

A few prominent corporate key figures and also sportswoman such as AirAsia Bhd CEO Aireen Omar, Malaysian squash queen Datuk Nicol David and Founding President of the Institute for Democracy and Economic Affairs (IDEAS) Tunku Zain Al-'Abidin Tuanku Muhriz had featured in the talk series.
