KUALA LUMPUR:The Malaysian Meteorological Department (MetMalaysia) today issued an orange-level bad weather warning with continuous heavy rain in the districts of Pasir Mas, Jeli, Tanah Merah, Machang, Kuala Krai and Gua Musang.

MetMalaysia director-general Jailan Simon, in a statement, said a yellow-alert weather warning was also issued for Dungun and Kemaman districts in Terengganu and also Pahang for the same period.

"During that period, strong winds can occur in the coastal areas in the east coast states of the peninsula and Sabah.

"Most areas in the west coast states of the peninsula, Sarawak and Sabah are expected to experience thunderstorm and heavy rain, with strong winds, especially in the afternoon until early at night," he said.

He said the situation has the potential to cause flash floods in the low-lying areas, as well as damage to structures.

He said strong northeastern wind, with speed of up to 60 km per hr and waves as high as 4.5 metres, are expected to occur in the waters of Kelantan, Terengganu, Pahang and East Johor during the period.

In the waters of Sarawak, Sabah and the Federal Territory of Labuan, he said, strong northeast winds of up to 50 km per hr, with waves up to 3.5 metres high, are expected to occur during the period.

This condition could pose a risk of seawater overflowing into the coastal areas and river estuaries, he added.
