Foreign Minister Datuk Seri Anifah Aman is on a two-day working visit to Algiers, Algeria from Tuesday in conjunction with the 17th Ministerial Meeting of the Non-Aligned Movement (NAM).

Wisma Putra said the meeting would provide an opportunity for Anifah to continue his lobbying effort for Malaysia's candidature to the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) for the 2015-2016 term.

Anifah will also hold meetings with his counterparts to compare notes on bilateral, regional and international issues of mutual interest, the Foreign Ministry said in a statement today.

The foreign minister is scheduled to deliver a statement highlighting Malaysia's commitment and initiatives towards strengthening NAM in line with the theme of the meeting, "Enhanced solidarity for peace and prosperity", the statement said.

The NAM Ministerial Meeting, which is expected to be attended by representatives from 120 NAM member countries, is a forum to follow-up and evaluate the implementation of decisions made during the 16th NAM Summit which was held in Tehran, Iran in August 2012.

Wisma Putra said Malaysia's participation would highlight and reaffirm its continued commitment to NAM's cause and principles.

Malaysia was former chair of NAM from 2003 to 2006 and former troika member country of NAM from 2002 to 2009.
