The termination of Zainal Abidin Hassan's contract as Selangor head coach Sunday was due to the team's overall performance and not due to financial factors.

Selangor Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Mohamed Azmin Ali, who is also Football Association of Selangor (FAS) president, said the measure was neccessary to make The Red Giants a feared team once again.

"The proactive measure is based on merit and after taking into account the performance of the team, the culture and the attitude shown by the players since the start of the season.

"This is the real problem. I have to take action to improve the performance of the team," he told reporters when met after the ground breaking ceremony of Semenyih 2 Water Treatment Plant at Kampung Jenderam Hilir, here, Monday.

Azmin said although the performance of the Selangor football team was not classified as 'disastrous', action had to be taken for the long-term.

Yesterday, the FAS said the decision to terminate the contract of head coach Zainal Abidin was made after taking into account Selangor's poor performance in recent matches.

Assistant head coach K. Gunalan was handed the job of acting head coach for the remaining Super League and Malaysia Cup matches.
