KUALA LUMPUR:UMNO should acknowledge the fact that it needs to work together to form a government, said Ilham Centre Research Fellow, Associate Prof Dr Hamidin Abd Hamid.

He said the party needs to realise that no party can dominate the government after the last General Election (GE) as they dominated before.

"UMNO holds the largest number of seats but they still need the cooperation of other political parties.

"I think UMNO has to be strategic in determining their behaviour and what the UMNO leadership is doing is still moving in the old paradigm that feels UMNO is still the backbone.

"Currently, UMNO is not the backbone but they must learn and must accept that fact. UMNO must act as a support party," he said via Skype on Wednesday.

The UMNO Supreme Working Council meeting is expected to be held at Menara Dato Onn on Wednesday night.

The focus is of course on the grassroots’ proposals brought during the meeting of UMNO President, Datuk Seri Ahmad Zahid Hamidi with the UMNO division heads on Tuesday.

Rumours of UMNO's new political alignment are getting louder after Kelantan UMNO rejects a political cooperation with Parti Pribumi Bersatu Malaysia (Bersatu).

Previously, a study conducted by Merdeka Center found that there were still many voters in Malaysia stating their disagreement for UMNO to leave the Perikatan Nasional (PN).

The study was conducted to touch on their views on the economy, leadership and current issues.
