A 17-year-old teenager was remanded over the murder investigation of a police officer who was bludgeoned to death with a rock yesterday.

According to a Bernama report, a remand order of seven days was granted for the juvenile, who is neither working or studying.

The order was granted by the deputy registrar V. Kanasan, at about noon earlier.

In the incident at about 8.30am yesterday, the deceased, Corporal Zal-Azri Abdul Somad, 31, from the Criminal Intelligence Division (D4) from the Malacca police headquarters, died at the scene.

Zal-Azri was part of a ‘Ops Lejang’ team of four other policemen who raided a factory in Taman Technology, Cheng, where a group of men were believed to be thought to be stealing scrap metal.

He was injured in the face after getting into a scuffle with one of the suspects who allegedly hit him with a rock.

While police arrested three other men aged between 17 to 23; the main suspect fled. However, the 17-year-old was later arrested in Krubong about two hours later.
