The election process at the PKR Nibong Tebal division turned chaotic yesterday when the voting results were annulled due to allegations of phantom voters.

It all began at around 6pm when the Central Election Committee (JPP) said it wanted the vote count to be held in a special area at Dewan JKKK Simpang Tiga, in Nibong Tebal.

However, party members objected to the move, resulting in a war of words.

The dispute then continued till 10pm when the results of the vote count was announced by Bukit Tambung state assemblyman Law Choo Kiang, who found that the number of registered voters and the number of ballots were not the same.

It was understood that the number of ballots received were 838 compared to the registered voters of 671.

Candidate for the division chairman post, Datuk Mansor Othman, became furious when his request for the JPP for a recount was rejected, resulting in a small fracas in the hall.

More than 50 of Mansor’s supporters in the hall also got angry and proceeded to kick at tables and chairs, scolding the JPP as well as the supporters or the other candidates

PKR members then calmed Mansor down, and Law took drastic moves to contact the JPP chairman Datuk Johari Abdul to control the situation.

Law, who was also the Speaker for the state assembly, then notified the officer in charge of the election the decision from Johari was that the results would be declared null and void.

As soon as the decision to annul the results was announced, the hall went dark as electricity was suddenly cut for about three minutes, causing the situation to turn chaotic.

However, Law was nowhere to be found after the electricity returned to normal, raising questions from party members.

The Nibong Tebal division was a three-cornered contest between S Sanjeeviramah, Mansor and the incumbent, Maktar Shapee.
