The police force has been urged to improve its intelligence network into illegal activities at the Bukit Bintang area.

Former Inspector-General of Police, Tan Sri Musa Hassan, said police should also identify the group involved in Thursday morning’s incident as soon as possible, and if they have done so, existing laws should be put in place.

“We have Ops Cantas, the brainchild of Inspector-General of Police Tan Sri Khalid Abu Bakar, to detain criminals and triad members.

“We hope this kind of operation can be continued in a bid to curb violent crimes such as murder and attempted murder with the use of firearms in the country,” he said when contacted by Astro AWANI here today.

In the incident early this morning, 13 people were injured after a bomb exploded at a building in Bukit Bintang, Kuala Lumpur.

One victim was critically injured and later succumbed to his wounds while being treated at the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) of the Kuala Lumpur Hospital (HKL).

Four vehicles, in the vicinity at the time of the incident, a Toyota Alphard, Mazda, BMW and Toyota Camry were also damaged.

Musa said, incidents like this will continue to occur if there is lack of enforcement from the parties involved.

“This is a serious matter and the police have to look into it seriously, if not it will continue to happen.

“This is the act of an ‘underground’ group, police need to identify all the gangster groups and improve its intelligence network,” he said.

Ops Cantas was launched following repeal of the Internal Security Act (ISA) and Emergency Ordinance (OE) in 2012, which saw an increase in violent crimes involving firearms.
