Malaysian Non-Governmental Organisations (NGOs) can play an important role in assisting towards a peaceful solution in Syria.

Mother Superior Agnes-Mariam de le Croix from the Convent of St James in Syria said that the organisations can help by providing research and information to the general public.

“Without this re-information it is impossible to unite forces and think of a peaceful solution for Syria,” she said during a press conference after a forum on the Syrian crisis on Wednesday.

She said a lot can be done by these NGOs and private institutions such as the International Movement for a Just World (JUST) and Insititute of Strategic and International Studies (ISIS) to enlighten the public on this issue.

“So we hope that the Malaysian government as well as the Malaysian society will stand with peace to help claim the rights of the Syrian people in protecting the sovereign country,” said Mother Agnes.

She also urges the international community as well as the Arab League to stop fueling the breaching of international law and stop financing the foreign fighters.

Meanwhile, ISIS Chairman and CEO, Tan Sri Datuk Seri Mohamed Jawhar Hassan said ISIS will continue to conduct forums to diversify information so that people can enrich their knowledge of whats happening in Syria.

“Our objective is to dessiminate information, knowledge and understanding in the hopes of directly or indirectly leading into Malaysian response,” he told Astro Awani.

He added that ‘Malaysian response’ does not necessarily mean government’s response, but also it could be from other NGOs and Muslims who can provide humanitarian assistance.
