The new fares for LRT and monorail is expected to be announced by October 31, said Land Public Transport Commission (SPAD) chairman Tan Sri Syed Hamid Albar.

He said SPAD had written to the Prime Minister about the new fares and added that it will be brought to the Cabinet for approval.

"We will standardise the fares and inform Prasarana Malaysia Bhd on the new fares,” he said after visiting the new Awan Besar LRT station today.

The fares were last revised in 2002.

Prasarana had applied to the government to review its train fares in view of the increase in maintenance cost and electricity tariffs.

Prasarana, which is a wholly government-owned company, runs the LRT and Monorail services in Kuala Lumpur and the surrounding areas and also bus services in the Klang Valley, Kuantan and Penang.

In the Klang Valley alone, it operates 165 bus routes covering 980 housing estates daily.
