Three workers of a telecommunication outlet at Low Yat Plaza were fined RM1,800 in default two months' jail each, by the Magistrate's Court here today for causing hurt to an unemployed youth.

Low Leong Seng, 29, Eric Chan Weng, 23, and Soo Weng Hing, 26, admitted before magistrate Muhamad Faizal Ismail to injuring Shahrul Anuar Abdul Aziz, 22, at 4.57pm on June 11.

According to the facts of the case, one Mohamad Khairul Azmi Mazlan, 22, had entered a shop at the building with the victim to look for his missing phone but failed to find it.

They then left the outlet but while at the escalator on the ground floor, someone started shouting in Malay, "Stop, get them, get them..someone's stolen a handphone".

Mohamad Khairul, the complainant in the case said three men approached and assaulted Shahrul Anuar; he tried to rescue the victim but was also beaten up and accused of being an accomplice.

The complainant said Shahrul Anuar was nabbed on suspicion of stealing a handphone while he was allowed to go.

In mitigation, the trio who were unrepresented pleaded for a lenient sentence.

However, deputy public prosecutor N. Joy Jothi urged the court to impose an appropriate sentence, saying that the case had drawn unfavourable national attention, and in the interest of the public.

On July 14, Shahrul Anuar claimed trial in the magistrate's court to stealing a handphone at Low Yat Plaza.

He was released on RM3,000 bail pending re mention on Aug 14.
