The remand period of two contactors held for investigations into misappropriation of government funds of over RM100 million has been extended for seven days until April 1.

The court order for the extension of remand against the men, both 41, was issued by Magistrate Nik Isfahanie Tasnim Wan Ab. Rahman.

Another contractor, aged 36, was released on bail of RM10,000 in one surety.

The three operators of event management companies were among nine people, including a senior officer of the Youth and Sports Ministry (KBS), arrested last week by the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) for alleged involvement in the embezzlement of government funds totalling RM107 million.

The syndicate is believed to have been active since 2010, using the finance division of the ministry to pay 14 companies purportedly for organising sports programmes.

Yesterday, the MACC obtained an extension to the remand order against the senior officer and two contractors until March 30.

Two more contractors and a woman who is allegedly a proxy for a company, whose seven-day remand had expired, were released yesterday on MACC bail of RM10,000 in one surety each.

Yesterday, an Agriculture and Agro-based Industry Ministry official was also remanded for seven days until March 30 to facilitate the investigations.
