The DAP candidate for the Bukit Gelugor by-election Ramkarpal Singh Deo said "he was his own man" and did not need to "walk in his father's shadow" to face it.

His father, former DAP chairman Karpal Singh, who was also the incumbent, died in a road accident on April 17.

Ramkarpal Singh said it was unfair for people to label him as "his father's son" without first seeing the result he would produce in the contesting the seat.

"I am not just Karpal Singh's son. I also have my own capability. It is a bit unfair to just generalise like
that," he told reporters after campaigning at the Farlim wet market here today.

He was acompanied by DAP advisor Lim Kit Siang, Penang DAP chairman Chow Kon Yeow and his elder brother Gobind Singh Deo, who is also the Member of Parliament for Puchong.

The by-election, polling of which is on May 25, is seeing a four-cornered fight with the other candidates being Parti Cinta Malaysia vice chairman and two independents, Mohd Nabi Bux Mohd Abdul Sathar and Abu Backer Sidek Mohammad Zan.

In the 2013 General Election, Karpal Singh won the seat by a majority of , 42,706 undi, defeating Barisan Nasional candidate Teh Beng Yeam, who garnered 13,597 votes.
