A construction worker was charged at the Sessions Court here today with two counts of supporting the Islamic State (IS) militant group.

Muhammad Kasyfullah Kasim, 36, appeared calm and nodded when the charge was read out and no plea was recorded from him.

He was charged for entering Syria on a plane from the Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA), to provide support as a member of the IS movement.

Muhammad Kasyfullah was proffered an alternative charge of entering Syria to support armed terrorism, with the intent of spreading an ideological cause that threatened the Syrian public.

The offences were allegedly committed between Dec 28, 2013 until April 7, 2014.

He is being charged under Section 130J of the Penal Code, which provides for life imprisonment or a jail term not exceeding 30 years, or a fine.

Judge Rozaidi Yaacob set Feb 13, 2015 for mention of the case.
