According to The Hollywood Reporter, Chris Cooper will follow in Willem Dafoe's footsteps as the industrialist who becomes Spider-Man's sworn enemy, the Green Goblin.

Cooper has joined the cast of "The Amazing Spider-Man 2," which is currently being filmed by director Marc Webb. The actor will play Norman Osborn, one of the most popular villains from Marvel Comics.

Chris Cooper, who won an Oscar in 2003 for "Adaptation," recently featured in "The Town" and "The Company Men."

There is no indication as to whether or not the industrialist will turn into the Green Goblin in this second installment of the trilogy. Spider-Man will already have to confront two of his major enemies, Electro and Rhino, played by Jamie Foxx and Paul Giamatti. Dane DeHaan will play Norman's son, the ambivalent Harry Osborn, who also becomes the Green Goblin in the original comic book. Andrew Garfield will reprise his role as Spider-Man.

"The Amazing Spider-Man 2" will not just be centered on the hero's fights. Indeed, the film will set up a love triangle between Peter Parker/Spider-Man, Gwen Stacy -- still being played by Emma Stone -- and Mary-Jane Watson, played by Shailene Woodley. British actress Felicity Jones will also star in the film in a role that is shrouded in secrecy. The movie is set for release on May 2, 2014 in North American cinemas.
