Top men's doubles, Goh V Shem/Tan Wee Kiong have been reminded not to boast about their number one world ranking but must maintain the position.

Badminton Association of Malaysia (BAM) deputy president Datuk Seri Mohamad Norza Zakaria said the Rio Olympic silver medalists need to maintain consistency if they want to achieve more success.

"Firstly, I would like to congratulate them for being the world number one. However, there are more challenges ahead. Consistency is the key if they want to maintain that position for a long time," he told Bernama today.

Meanwhile, national doubles coach Jeremy Gan said V Shem/Wee Kiong must at least reach the semi-final of the China Open (Nov 15-20) and Hong Kong Open (Nov 22-27) to remain as the world number one pair.

"Competition in the men's doubles is stiff because China, Denmark and Indonesia have strong pairs," he added.

V Shem/Wee Kiong took over the world number ranking after Lee Yong Dae/ Yoo Yeon Seong of South Korea announced their retirement recently.

The Badminton World Federation (BWF) ranking issued yesterday has V Shem/ Wee Kiong as the number one (71,297 points) followed by Chai Biao/Hong Wei of China in second (70,220 points) and Mathias Boe/Cartsen Mogensen of Denmark in third (67,534 points). --BERNAMA
