National road tandem race cyclist Mohd Khairul Hazwan Wahab failed to shine at the Rio Paralympics when he came in 18th in the men's time trial B (visually impaired).

In the 30km race with 23 competitors, Khairul Hazwan who was assisted by pilot rider Muhamad Rauf Nur Misbah, clocked 40 minutes and 6.96 seconds, 5:31.63s behind gold medal winner Steve Bate from Great Britain who clocked 34:35.33s.

The silver went to Vincent Ter Schure from the Netherlands (34:44.16s) and the bronze to Australian Kieran Modra (35:09.06s), during the cycling event which started Wednesday in Pontal.

Khairul Hazwan who is making his second appearance at the Paralympic Games, will compete again this Saturday in the 120km road race.

Malaysia is the only country from Asia competing in this category at the Paralympics this time.

Meanwhile, after five races in the sailing event, Malaysia's Al Mustakim Matrin is at this point, in 11th place in the single-person keelboat (2.4mR) B2 (disabled in both hands and feet) category, having collected 61 points.

Helena Lucas from Great Britain leads with 27 points in this category involving 16 competitors from both sexes.

At the sailing event held at Marina da Gloria, Al Mustakim failed to complete the challenge in the third race and in the following two rounds, he came in 11th and 10th with a time of 52.32s and 51.57s respectively.

The third and fourth rounds which were supposed to take place on Tuesday, were postponed due to bad weather. -- BERNAMA
