Malaysia emerged as the overall champion in archery events at the Asean University Games (AUG) by winning 6 gold, 3 silver and 3 bronze medals when archery events ended at the National Sports Complex Archery Range here today.

Coach Mohd Marbawi Sulaiman expressed satisfaction with his charges who produced consistent results throughout the three days of competition.

"Our initial target was four gold medals and we are happy to have won six although competition was stiff, especially from Indonesia and host team Laos," he told reporters here today.

Mohd Marbawi, a former Olympian archer said apart from experienced archers, the inclusion of a number of new faces was to prepare them early for international duty in the future.

In the final event of the AUG archery events, Mohd Kharuddin Ashah and Fatin Nurfatehah Mat Salleh put the icing on the cake for a fruitful outing by winning the mixed pair gold after beating Laos pair 8-3.
