National shuttler Datuk Lee Chong Wei has been suspended for eight months beginning August 30, 2014 for doping violation.

Following this decision, Youth and Sports Minister, Khairy Jamaluddin in a press conference today said Chong Wei will be able to compete again beginning May 1.

This decision means Chong Wei will be allowed to compete in the Sudirman Cup in Dongguan, China scheduled from May 10 to May 17.

He will also be able to compete for the SEA Games in Singapore scheduled in June and Jakarta's World Championship in August.

The panel ruled that the degree of negligence was 'rather light
“He has decided that he will continue to play and resume competing at the very highest level immediately after his suspension is over.

“He has informed me that he is ready to play in the Sea Games in Singapore," Khairy said at a press conference at his ministry here, today.

Khairy said the panel is convinced this is not a case of doping with intent to cheat.

"The panel found that Lee had been 'negligent', but ruled that the degree of negligence was 'rather light'," he added.

"His dexamathesone contamination was said to be from the gelatin casing of food supplement he was consuming since he was 13-years-old," said Khairy.

Chong Wei, 33, was temporarily suspended by the badminton World Federation (BWF) since Nov 11, 2014 after being found to have consumed the banned substance dexamethasone while competing in the World Championship in Copenhagen, Denmark, in August last year.

Beginning Jan 1, 2015, BWF had amended its doping rulings and those who are found guilty of using it can be suspended until four years.
