During the campaign period of the 13th General Election, several cases of political violence have been reported.

The Royal Malaysian Police (PDRM) recently announced a total of 1,056 such cases have been recorded since the dissolution of parliament on April 3. There has been 387 cases recorded since nomination day.

Among these political violence cases are:

• Nibong Tebal, April 23: An explosion took place during a ceramah organised by the Barisan Nasional (BN) on the grounds of BN operations room in Nibong Tebal, Penang.

A security officer was reportedly wounded in the right leg by the explosion which was caused by Improvised Explosive Device (IED).

• Seri Kembangan, April 23: A Barisan Nasional (BN) Lestari Putra (LEP) 5, Serdang branch operation room was reportedly vandalised. Flag pole were broken, woods were burned and banners were brought down. Thorns were also reportedly scattered at the entrance of the operation room.

• Semabok, April 23: The Barisan Nasional (BN) Duyong Semabok operation room in Malacca was broken into. The incident was discovered by a worker. Concerned party believe there are elements of politically motivated sabotage as computers with important election data were taken, while other valuable items such as printers we left behind. Also missing a rented television, the loss is estimated about RM1, 500.

• Klang, April 25: Two cars belonging to the daughter of PKR candidate Dr Xavier Jayakumar was burnt when a man threw a container of oil at the entrance her house in Klang Jaya, Klang. The incident is believed to be another politically motivated incident.

The incident occurred at 11 pm when an election agent Sangetha Jeyakumar, 30, was with her father at the center of PR services after a meetiing.

Neighbours said the two men, one armed with a machete, in a silver colored Kia Sephia, got down from the car and climb the gate to get into the house.

The suspect then broke the back window of a car parked on the front porch before pouring kerosene and lit it.

Kota Bharu, Apr 23: A part-time 61-year-old RTM journalist died after being reportedly attacked by political party supporters in front of his house in Bandar Lama Gua Musang about 1.15 am.

Police, however later said that Mohamed Yaakub, died from a heart attack and classified the case as sudden death.

Pantai Dalam, April 1: A series of cases of political violence occured in Lembah Pantai when Parliament PKR election workers were threatened by a group of thugs invading and destroying their tent.

The group came back the next day tent with six other friends with four motorcycles, also accompanied by a group of gangsters in two cars and a taxi.

They were taking away flags, confiscating the pamphlets, break away tents and insults the workers with harsh words. Also seized a Samsung Galaxy Note belonging to a worker.

• Bangsar, April 1: One of the operating room PKR Jalan Kurau area was broken into. Items such as wood and flags were stolen. The losses estimated at more than RM20,000.
