KUALA LUMPUR: Universiti Teknologi PETRONAS (UTP) is emerging as a frontrunner in sustainability education. The university believes that integrating Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) principles across its core operations will equip graduates to tackle global challenges.

UTP Vice Chancellor Prof Dato’ Ir Ts Dr Mohamed Ibrahim Abdul Mutalib highlights the university's commitment to sustainability, evident in its curriculum, research, and campus operations, while adhering to PETRONAS' sustainability framework.

This translates into initiatives such as installing a 7.4MWp solar photovoltaic rooftop panel at UTP – the largest single solar rooftop installation in Malaysia, upgrading energy efficiency and implementing waste reduction programmes and green mobility.

“UTP's research focus aligns with these efforts, prioritising areas like smart communities and sustainable energy solutions. The university also collaborates with local governments, communities, and NGOs to implement technologies like wastewater treatment and solar energy for community use,” Mohamed Ibrahim said.

Moreover, sustainability is woven into UTP's curriculum.  Students are encouraged to undertake projects focused on achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and fostering a culture of environmental responsibility on campus.

UTP Deputy Vice Chancellor Academic Prof Ir Dr Hilmi Mukhtar emphasises the university's commitment to graduates who are not only technically proficient but also socially responsible.

"We expose our students to concepts like carbon footprint, carbon neutrality, and sustainable oil and gas resource development. We also integrate SDGs into group engineering, science, and technology projects. Students incorporate sustainability elements throughout their studies, including final year projects related to energy sustainability and smart communities," he said.

To further advance sustainability efforts, UTP will host the World Engineering, Science and Technology Congress (ESTCON) 2024 at the Sabah International Convention Centre on 10 to 11 September.

To be officiated by Sabah Chief Minister Datuk Seri Panglima Hajiji Noor, ESTCON2024 will explore the latest advancements in energy transition, digital technologies, and smart city development, all with a focus on achieving a sustainable future.

"ESTCON2024 is a platform for participants to network, collaborate, and exchange ideas and research findings. We invite the public to attend as non-presenting delegates to learn about sustainable practices and network with experts," said Hilmi, who is also the ESTCON2024 Organising Committee Co-Chairman.

To learn more about ESTCON2024 visit https://estcon.utp.edu.my or register at https://uevent.utp.edu.my/world-engineering-science-technology-congress-estcon-2024/npd. Registration is open until 11 September, and walk-in registrations are also welcome.

UTP's commitment to sustainability extends beyond shaping graduates; it's a call to action for a greener future. Through innovative practices and community engagement, UTP inspires students, staff, and the wider community to embrace environmentally responsible practices.
