Police today detained Penang Voluntary Patrol (PPS) deputy chairman Ng Wei Aik to assist investigations on the team set up by the DAP-led state government.

Northeast District police chief ACP Mior Faridalatrash Wahid said Ng, who is also Tanjung MP, was held at 1pm while giving a statement at the district's police headquarters here.

"Ng was detained to assist investigations under Section 43 of the Societies Act 1966.

"On whether he will be remanded or not, will depend on our investigations," he said when contacted by Bernama.

Ng was later released on police bail at 6.45pm.

Last Sunday, police arrested 156 PPS members including its chairman Phee Boon Poh, who is also the State Welfare, Caring Community and Environment Committee chairman, for ignoring warnings to stop conducting PPS activities after it was found to be not registered with the Registrar of Societies (ROS).

On Monday, police detained Seri Delima state assemblyman R.S.N. Rayer over the same matter.

Meanwhile, Mior Faridalatrash said the investigation papers on the PPS that were sent to Public Prosecutor yesterday were returned to the police today.

"The Prosecution Unit wants police to tie up some loose ends to enable further action to be taken," he said.

He said police did not rule out the possibility of calling more PPS leaders to assist investigations.
