More than 2,000 affordable housing units will begin construction in Selangor starting this month.
Selangor Menteri Besar Tan Sri Khalid Ibrahim in his media statement said that the affordable housing project, also known as Rumah Selangorku, built by the Selangor Housing and Property Board will provide opportunities for people in the state, particularly those in the low to medium income bracket to purchase a property.
"The houses are made up of three types of area that are 800, 900 and 1,000 square feet, and which is built on a land belonging to Menteri Besar Incorporated (MBI) with an area of 28 hectares in Sungai Sering, Hulu Klang," he said.
The pilot project for Rumah Selangorku consists of eight blocks which will be built in four phases and is expected to be completed in six and a half years.
"The overall cost of the project is estimated at RM591 million, including the cost of building roads, upgrading the surau into a mosque, and building a sewage and plumbing system," he said.
The groundbreaking ceremony for the pilot project is scheduled to be held on February 22.
"The construction work is expected to start within six months to that date after approving the appointment of the contractors.
"The construction of these houses will use the Industrial Building System (Pre-fabricated - IBS) to expedite the construction period compared to conventional methods," he added.
It is part of the 5,000 units of affordable housing that will be built using the prefabricated concept built for five years until 2018 from the overall target of 35,000 units.
Meanwhile, the Selangor State Development Corporation (PKNS) has also affordable housing through the IDAMAN PKNS programme.
"There is an affordable housing project that was completed by PKNS at Bukit Botak in Selayang and Seksyen 3 of Bandar Baru Bangi, with several more projects still under implementation and planning."
The state government has allocated RM100 million using cash reserves for the implementation of this project as announced on Budget 2014.
