Penang Police have given the assurance that security in the state is under control following the stepping up of patrols against possible terrorist threats, particularly in the state's waters.

State Police chief Datuk Chuah Ghee Lye said the police had stepped up patrols and surveillance in the wake of the terrorist attacks abroad.

"More frequent patrols are being carried out in the waters off Penang. The marine police force has also been directed to step up security patrols, especially during the festive season, as many illegal immigrants will attempt to use the sea route to return to their countries," he told reporters here Monday.

Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Ahmad Zahid Hamidi had called for the tightening of security control at all entry points nationwide to ensure that the terrorists being hunted in neighbouring countries did not enter Malaysia.

Chuah said security in tourist spots such as the airport and shopping centres had also been heightened.

"We will also conduct joint patrols with the military in these areas. Meanwhile, the omnipresence of the tourist police, motorcycle patrol unit and patrol cars are to ensure that the police are constantly on vigil in all strategic locations and in public areas," he said.
