Police have yet to receive any notice from the organisers of the ‘Demonstrasi Pro-Redzuan’ scheduled to be held at the main entrance of Universiti Malaya (UM) after Friday prayers.

Brickfields Chief of Police, ACP Muhammad Azlee Abdullah in a statement to Astro AWANI said they have not received any information regarding the demonstration.

“We will however still monitor and action will be taken under the Peaceful Assembly Act 2012,” said Muhammad Azlee.

The demonstration is scheduled to be held by UM Students' Association and several other student bodies as a way of condemning the top management of the university for its failure to uphold academic freedom over the “forced” resignation of the director of UM's Centre for Democracy and Elections (UMCEDEL) Prof Dr. Mohamad Redzuan Othman.

Prof Dr Redzuan was ordered to resign as the director of UMCEDEL last month by the Education Ministry.

His service as the university’s Dean of the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences was also terminated although he was re-nominated to the post by the faculty lecturers during recent faculty election.

It is believed that the order to resign and the termination of services was because of a survey carried out by the UMCEDEL on politics, democracy and election which was seen favourable to the Opposition.

UM Vice Chancellor, Prof Datuk Dr Amin Jalaludin however, denied of any political pressure.
