Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin on Saturday appealed to voters in the Kajang state constituency to vote for Barisan Nasional (BN) Datin Paduka Chew Mei Fun as she is able to serve them well.

The deputy prime minister said besides having no intention of becoming the menteri besar, Chew had excellent track record in serving the people and a person with integrity.

"We decide to contest in the Kajang state by-election to offer to the Kajang people a representative who is capable of giving the best service to them.

"I believe, if the Kajang voters give Chew a chance to be their elected representative, she will be able to do the best for the Kajang people," he said in a statement here on Saturday.

There are 39,278 voters in the Kajang state constituency who will determine Chew's fate in the contest for the seat against Parti Keadilan Rakyat's Datuk Seri Dr Wan Azizah Wan Ismail. Polling is on Sunday.

Muhyiddin, who is also BN deputy chairman, said the Kajang by-election witnessed how the PKR leaders placed their political interests above the people's interests by asking the incumbent assemblyman to vacate the seat, hence allowing for a fresh election to be called, simply to enable Opposition leader Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim to contest and then made the Selangor Menteri Besar.

He said the Kajang by-election was held because of political conflict in PKR and the 'Kajang Move' was made to enable Anwar to become menteri besar to save the party.

However, he said the PKR's 'Kajang Move' failed following the Court of Appeal's decision in finding Anwar guilty of sodomy, hence making him ineligible to contest, but was replaced by his wife, Wan Azizah.

Muhyiddin said as wise voters, the Kajang people should make clear their stand of rejecting leaders who pushed aside people's interest to achieve their personal interests by voting for a leader who is committed to serve them.

"So, I humbly appeal to voters in the Kajang state constituency to vote for the BN candidate in this by election," he added.

The deputy prime minister hoped that the by-election would be held in a peaceful manner and all the voters to come out to exercise their right as citizens of a democratic country.

Meanwhile, Rural and Regional Development Minister Datuk Seri Mohd Shafie Apdal hoped the Kajang people would exercise their right wisely for their long term interests.

"Vote for a representative who is capable of serving the people and Datin Paduka Chew Mei Fun is a person who is committed and I am confident, she is capable of becoming the best people’s representative," he said when met by reporters after a house to house campaign at Batu 10 near here.

Another Umno vice-president, Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi reiterated his call for the Kajang people to evaluate Chew's background, especially on her close relation with the federal government.

He said it had been proven that the BN elected representatives were capable of serving the people, despite being in a state ruled by the opposition.
