KUALA LUMPUR: A mother and her eight children were among 10 people who were killed in an accident involving four vehicles at the USJ Rest and Service Area (RR) of the North-South Expressway Central Link (ELITE Highway) near here last night.

The other person who perished in the midnight crash was a mechanic, Mohamad Rahimi Rolex, 27.

Norul Naziah, her husband Abd Razak Majit, 50, and their eight children were travelling in two Proton Wira cars but had stopped on the emergency lane after one of the cars broke down.

Subang Jaya deputy police chief Supt Mohd Fairus Jaafar said a trailer lorry was reported to have crashed into their cars and another vehicle at 12.09 am at KM8.3 of the Shah Alam-bound side of the ELITE Highway.

Abd Razak and the occupants of the third car, a Perodua Axia, - Mimie Nafiesa Abdullah, 19; Ihyat Sufi Shokip and Ummi Nasuha Annuwar, both 20 - all suffered minor injuries.

The 45-year-old driver of the trailer lorry and his two children, aged 19 and 14, travelling with him also suffered minor injuries.

Abd Razak's family were on their way home to Padang Jawa, Klang from Melaka when the accident happened.

Selangor Fire and Rescue Department director Norazam Khamis said 12 personnel from the Subang Jaya and Puchong Fire and Rescue Stations were rushed to the scene in response to an emergency call at about midnight.

He said a crane was used to lift the trailer from the wreckage before the bodies of the victims could be removed.

Mohd Fairus said initial investigations showed that one of the Wira broke down, forcing those in the other two vehicles to stop to render assistance.

"The trailer lorry driver has been remanded for four days until Tuesday to assist in investigations," he said in a statement today.

He said drug and alcohol tests conducted on the lorry driver turned out negative and the case was being investigated under Section 41 (1) of the Road Transport Act 1987.

"Members of the public who have information are asked to assist in the investigation by contacting Subang Jaya district police headquarters traffic investigating officer ASP Lim Chin Huat at 012-2018080," he said.
