KUALA LUMPUR: Given the significant amount of time spent at work, maintaining good mental health in the workplace is crucial for overall well-being, said Befrienders KL patron Tan Sri Lee Lam Thye.

Lee, in a statement in conjunction with World Mental Health Day, emphasised that mental wellness is closely linked to productivity, and fostering good mental health in the workplace yields benefits such as enhanced focus and quality of work, reduced absenteeism, increased motivation, better teamwork and higher employee retention rates.

Among the strategies to promote mental health at work, Lee suggested organising awareness programmes to reduce stigma and promote well-being among employees, such as conducting workshops on stress management.

"Managers can undergo skills strengthening workshops to equip them with the knowledge of recognising symptoms and offer emotional support through active listening," he said.

Lee further highlighted the importance of promoting open discussions about mental health, encouraging employees to share their struggles in a confidential environment, training managers in basic counselling skills, and utilising an Employee Assistance Programme (EAP).

Other strategies include allocating a budget for mental health initiatives and establishing policies that prioritise mental health in areas such as working hours, workload management, a safe and healthy environment, and non-discriminatory practices.

"Allow flexible working arrangements according to suitability. This will enable employees to maintain a better work-life balance," he said.

Since 1992, Oct 10 has been designated as World Mental Health Day, with this year's theme being 'It is Time to Prioritise Mental Health in the Workplace.'
