A powerful quake struck several areas of southern Philippines on Saturday, rousing those who were asleep and sending people outdoors, China's Xinhua news agency reported.

There were no immediate reports of damage or injuries following the quake, which according to the US Geological Survey has a magnitude of 6.5.

The temblor which struck at 6.53am local time at a depth of 69 kilometres was tectonic in origin and traced southeast of Mati City, in Mindanao's Davao Oriental province, the USGS said. -- BERNAMA
