Those who want the Sedition Act 1948 to be repealed are asked to give an explanation on the rationality of the move.

Umno Supreme Council (MT) member Datuk Seri Mukhriz Tun Dr Mahathir said this was because no one who had disputed the act had come forward to explain its weaknesses.

"So far, I have not heard of anyone giving an explanation on the act that is seen as weak, bias and not in line with the current environment...where is the weakness of this Sedition Act," he told reporters after opening the delegates meeting of the Kulai Umno division, here Saturday.

Also present was Kulai Umno division head Zainal Abidin Jidin.

Mukhriz, who is also the Kedah Menteri Besar, pointed out that it was best for the Sedition Act 1948 to be retained to ensure security, solidarity and racial harmony in the country.

On the proposal by the government to replace the act with the National Harmony Act, he said the promulgation of the act must be carried out carefully before it was approved for implementation.

"What we fear is that the interested parties are not given an opportunity to look at the new act before its approval," he said.

Earlier in his speech, Mukhriz called on all Umno members to strongly uphold the sincere attitude in championing the party's cause.
