UMNO Youth chief Khairy Jamaluddin has expressed over reports with elements of defamation on the country's leadership as this can affect Malaysia's credibility and economy.

Khairy, who is Youth and Sports Minister, said many especially the young people did not check and verify the authenticity of any information received.

"In this kind of situation, it (slander) not only undermines the credibility of a leader but also the country.

"Every allegation must have proof and we need to get the information from legitimate sources. Otherwise, we cannot become a mature society," he told reporters after attending a Ramadan event organised by UMNO Youth on Sunday.

"We have no choice but to file lawsuits against anyone who makes accusations without proof so that the public will know that we will not tolerate any attempt to defame the government and country's leadership," he added.
