KUALA LUMPUR:Selangor has seen a sharp increase in COVID-19 infection cases since the end of  September.

According to the Ministry of Health, the increase was recorded after the entry and return of visitors from Sabah.

“The first cluster reported in Selangor in this third wave is the Jalan Apas Cluster, which is on 28 September 2020 where it has involved families returning from Sabah.

"The increase in local contagion cases in the state of Selangor began to be seen on October 2, 2020 and consistently increasing until today," said Director General of Health Tan Sri Dr Noor Hisham Abdullah at the COVID-19 latest development media conference, today.

He said, the situation was also due to the population density and high movement rate among the population and visitors in Selangor.

Selangor today recorded 132 positive cases, bringing the total number of COVID-19 positive cases in the state to 3,489 cases.

However, Dr Noor Hisham informed that the infection rate or R-naught in the state was successfully lowered from 1.9 to around 1.48 to 1.5.

The following 26 active clusters were recorded in Selangor from the first cluster (Jalan Apas Cluster) until the latest cluster (Hentian Cluster) was announced:

• A total of 18 active clusters (69.2 per cent) are local infection clusters, while eight (8) clusters (30.8 per cent) are related to migrants returning from Sabah.
• The six (6) latest clusters reported since 11 October 2020 are related to local infections.
• Nine (9) out of 26 clusters are closely related to workplace spread (34.6 per cent).
