KUALA LUMPUR:Malaysia recorded the highest number of deaths from COVID-19 infection with 24 cases on Monday.

Of the number, 21 deaths involved Malaysians.

Director General of Health, Tan Sri Dr Noor Hisham Abdullah, said it brings the cumulative number of deaths in the country to 896, which is equivalent to 0.36 per cent of the total number of cases.

The last time Malaysia recorded the highest death rate was 21 cases on February 2.

In a similar development, Dr Noor Hisham informed that a total of 3,100 new daily COVID-19 cases were recorded in the last 24 hours involving 3,099 local cases and one import case.

The increase makes a total of 51,977 active COVID-19 cases in the country at this time.

Of that number, 282 cases are receiving treatment in the intensive care unit (ICU) with 134 of them needing respiratory assistance.

This brings the total number of positive cases to 192,679, with the number of COVID-19 recovery cases being 2,340 yesterday.

Dr Noor Hisham said Selangor continues to record the highest number of daily new cases with 1,196 infections, followed by Johor (490) and Melaka (344).
