This year's Hari Raya Aidilfitri will bring new meaning to a bone cancer fighter when she received a donation in the form of a 3D-printed bionic prosthetic hand specially designed for her.

Sixteen-year-old Farahdina Che Fauzan's left arm was amputated due to cancer two years ago.

"Even though this 3D-printed electromechanical hand only allows finger movements, I feel comfortable using it as it is so light and weighs only about 600 grams," she told Bernama recently.

The eldest daughter of Che Fauzan Che Ahmad, 46, and Hanismulizuana Mustaffa, 38, Farahdina was currently experimenting with the prosthetic hand that could be activated using bluetooth on a smartphone.

Hanismulizuana said that since her daughter used the 3D-printed prosthetic hand, she was more confident to face the community.

"Alhamdulillah (All praise be to Allah), her physical posture is more balanced now compared to the time before she began using the bionic hand," she said.

The bionic hand designer, Sujana Mohd Rejab, 48, admitted that producing it was quite a challenging task as this was the first prototype.

"In Farahdina''s case, I did not have specific reference to create the shoulder section that connects to her body, I was only advised about the hand movements by the Kubang Kerian University Hospital.

"InsyaAllah (God willing), there will be further research and development to be conducted to enable it to be more functional, such as moving the elbow and shoulder," Sujana said.

Meanwhile, Kota Bharu People's Association (POKB) president Datuk Sheikh Ahmad Dusuki Sheikh Mohamad said the association is currently working closely with Sujana to produce a new and more effective prosthetic hand for the girl.

He said as Farahdina was one of the association''s adopted children, POKB would continue monitoring and ensuring her wellbeing, which includes financing the cost of her chemotherapy treatments.
