Law lecturer Prof Dr Azmi Sharom was allegedly denied entry into Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia (UKM) last night, where he was scheduled to hold a talk.

He was invited by Gabungan Mahasiswa UKM (GMUKM) to talk to the students on the Sedition Act, The Malaysian Insider reported.

According to the news portal, Azmi was sneaked into the campus by one of the organisers by foot following multiple roadblocks allegedly set up to stop him from attending the event.

“So we sneaked into the campus, only to be chased out by the guards when we reached the venue.‎ They didn't give any reason. They just said that the university management had 'haramkan' (banned) the event,” he was quoted by the news portal.

Azmi who was charged on Sept 2 under the Section 4(1)(b) of the Sedition Act 1948 for his article "Take Perak crisis route for speedy end to Selangor impasse, Pakatan told", had yesterday applied to challenge the legality of the Act.

On Sept 10, more than 500 UM students and lecturers staged a protest at the campus in support of Azmi.

The protest called ‘Solidarity Walk for Dr Azmi Sharom’ was organised by University of Malaya Students Association (PMUM) and University of Malaya Academic Staff Association (PKAUM).

It was also reported that Attorney-General Tan Sri Abdul Gani Patail said the A-G’s Chambers is in the midst of reviewing the cases involving Azmi and several others who were charged under the Sedition Act.

He said the final decision on the matter will be made soon.
