Federal Territories and Urban Well-being Minister of Datuk Raja Nong Chik Raja Zainal Abidin announced seven percent parking of spaces in commercial buildings will be allocated for women today.

This new rule applies for new and existing commercial buildings in Kuala Lumpur.

“For existing premises, we will give them some time to implement this system. However, when the time comes for them to renew their license, we will condition this system as part of the rules. Failing to do so, we will not renew their license,” said Raja Nong Chik.

Furthermore, he wants the city hall (DBKL) to conduct a research to also implement this new system at outdoor parking.

The women-only parking space should only be utilised by ladies driving alone and he doesn’t want any other parties to abuse it, including women accompanied by passengers.
“It is okay if they are accompanied by young children. However, women accompanied by adult children are not encouraged to park at this area because snatch theft victims are often women driving alone.
“They have to follow the rules. If a man or a woman driving with passengers is seen parked at this area, the parking management should clamp their cars,” he urged.

He said this was part of an initiative to curb snatch theft cases and increase security in parking space of commercial buildings.
“With this, I am sure we will be able to reduce the crime involving women at car parks and at the same time, it will assure drivers that the area is safe,” he added.
Some of the features of the women-only carpark include a signboard, ‘Panic Button’, CCTV, brighter lighting and close to the building’s entrance.

Raja Nong Chik officiated the new women's only car parks at KLCC. The new system operates today along with the parking light indicator.
