Phil Lord and Christopher Miller, who co-directed the first feature and are writing the sequel, have revealed a few plot details to Empire.

The two filmmakers, who are not expected to direct "The Lego Movie 2," explained their interest in the boy we meet in the second half of the film.

"Well I don't want to give you spoilers but we were really interested in what happens to that boy who's in the meta story in the first movie when he's four years older," Miller told Empire in an interview. "When he's an adolescent how does that change his point of view?"

This time lapse should also allow viewers to see "the characters start in a different place from the first movie," the director continued. "Emmet, for example, was in an existential crisis of having seen another dimension and was questioning the whole point of his existence."

Beyond writing the script for this sequel, Lord and Miller are on track to produce other future Lego movies, including "The Lego Batman Movie" and "Ninjago."

"The Lego Movie 2" is due to hit theaters sometime in 2018.
