Summit Entertainment studio has officially announced that British actress Kate Winslet will star in the cinematic adaptation of the "Divergent" trilogy, often compared to "The Hunger Games."

Veronica Roth's "Divergent" is set in a futuristic post-apocalyptic Chicago. The survivors live behind protective walls and they are divided into five factions: Abnegation, Dauntless, Erudite, Candor and Amity.

The story will center on Tris Prior, a young 16-year-old girl who must choose her faction. She was raised in an Abnegation family but she, like a few others in the population, is described as "Divergent". She finally chooses to join Dauntless, the faction responsible for maintaining order. This choice will be the starting point of an incredible adventure to stop the Erudite plot to overturn the political system.

Kate Winslet will play Jeanine Matthews, the group leader with an impressive IQ.

Shailene Woodley ("The Descendants") and Theo James ("Downton Abbey") will play the lead couple in this adaptation alongside Jai Courtney ("A Good Day to Die Hard"), Zoë Kravitz ("X-Men: First Class") and Maggie Q ("Nikita"). Aaron Eckhart ("The Dark Knight") and Ray Stevenson ("Thor") are still in talks.

"Divergent" will be filmed in Chicago and directed by Neil Burger ("Limitless"). It is set for release on March 21, 2014 in North American cinemas.
