Former prime minister Najib Abdul Razak told party leaders and members in Pekan on Sunday night that Umno will suffer a slow death if it remains complacent with its role in the Perikatan Nasional government.

Speaking at the Pekan Umno AGM, the former Umno president said the party will not be able to sustain itself by merely being a component party in Perikatan Nasional.

Communications and Multimedia Minister Saifuddin Abdullah said that reviving the Special Affairs Department (Jasa) will take less than the RM85.5 million it has been allocated.

He also assured the people that the agency will not be headed by politicians or be used for political propaganda for the Perikatan Nasional government.

Speaking during his Budget 2021 winding-up speech this afternoon, Saifuddin said Jasa would be rebranded as "Jabatan Komunikasi Komuniti" (J-KOM) and be used for grassroots communication.

The Umno Supreme Council meeting which will take place tonight, is expected to decide on a range of issues, including the suggestions and views expressed by BN lawmakers at a meeting earlier today.

Among the views expressed by MPs were for BN to renegotiate its position in the Perikatan Nasional government, and to reject cooperation with Anwar Ibrahim and DAP.

Dr Mahathir Mohamad has described Muhyiddin Yassin as a weak prime minister, who needs the support of Umno and PAS to keep him and his Perikatan Nasional government in power.

Meanwhile, in a separate story, the number of active Covid-19 cases exceeded 500 today as the Benteng LD cluster continues to swell.

The Health Ministry said it has detected 182 new cases in the 24 hours up to noon today. Together with 14 people who had just recovered, this brings the number of active cases to 501.

The Perikatan Nasional government believes that "flying cars", super drones or air mobility vehicles have great future potential.

"Superdrones have great potential for both the local and international markets," said Entrepreneur Development Minister Wan Junaidi Tuanku Jaafar in the Dewan Rakyat today.

The flying car was a pet project of Wan Junaidi's predecessor, Redzuan Mohd Yusoff, who is now a colleague in the PN cabinet.

Previously, while in the opposition, several members of the PN government had mocked the project.

Dr Mahathir Mohamad and the Bersatu MPs aligned to him will continue to back Warisan president Shafie Apdal as the prime minister candidate if the current Perikatan Nasional government is dislodged from power.

Mahathir said their faction would adhere to the recommendations made as a result of discussions between him and the leaders of Warisan, Amanah and DAP on June 25.

Muar MP Syed Saddiq Syed Abdul Rahman has been summoned for questioning over an interview he gave back in March in which he was critical of Prime Minister Muhyiddin Yassin and the Perikatan Nasional government.

Contacted by Malaysiakini today, he said that Bukit Aman had informed him on June 13 that he is being investigated over his appearance on Al Jazeera’s UpFront programme on March 6.

During the broadcasted interview, which was aired shortly after PN formed government, Syed Saddiq had expressed his disappointment in Muhyiddin for aligning himself with “kleptocrats” despite once vowing to challenge them.

The probe on the former Youth and Sports minister comes after the police investigations into former Water, Land and Natural Resources minister Xavier Jayakumar and former Women, Family and Community Development deputy minister Hannah Yeoh over their comments about the present administration.

With Pakatan Harapan and its allies claiming to have the numbers to upend the Perikatan Nasional government, discussions are still ongoing on who will be named as the prime minister candidate.

Dr Mahathir Mohamad has reportedly offered to return for a third term of several months with PKR president Anwar Ibrahim as his deputy.

Anwar, however, has reportedly rejected this.

The Gabungan Parti Sarawak (GPS) members of parliament today reiterated their support for the Perikatan Nasional government under the leadership of Prime Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin.

Muhyiddin expressed his appreciation to the Barisan Nasional (BN) MPs who continued to support the Perikatan Nasional government under his leadership.

The audio recording that resembled voices of Zahid and Anwar has not affected relationships between Umno and PAS or other parties in the Perikatan Nasional government.

Xavier resigned as PKR vice-president and member in March apart from pledging support to the Perikatan Nasional government.

UMNO leaders have been urged to stop the 'shadow play' and sever ties with Perikatan Nasional government immediately.

Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has claimed that the Perikatan Nasional (PN) government is currently struggling to 'buy and threaten' members of Parliament (MPs) before the Parliament is in session.

Mahfuz said the Prime Minister and the Perikatan Nasional government is the government that has seized the people's mandate.
