The 20th Commonwealth Games came to a close on Sunday night in a glittering occasion and full of entertainment at the Hampden Park.

The venue, which host the athletics event, roared when about 45,000 spectators enjoyed the performance by top international singers, Kylie Minogue, Lulu, Deacon Blue and Prides.

Earlier, Commonwealth Games Federation president Tunku Tan Sri Imran Tuanku Ja'afar thanked the "Clydesiders", the volunteers and people of Glasgow, who make the Games successful.

"Glasgow, you really have delivered in every aspect the best Games ever," he said.

The Commonwealth Games flag was then lowered and presented to Gold Coast Mayor Tom Tate, the next Commonwealth Games host in four years' time.

The Glasgow Commonwealth Games were officially closed by the Earl of Wessex, Prince Edward.

At the end of the ceremony, the Hampden stadium then resonated with renditions of Scotland's folk song 'Caledonia' and 'Auld Lang Syne', accompanied by a team of bagpipers.

In the 11-day Games, England emerged as the overall champion with 58 gold, 59 silver and 57 bronze medals, while host nation, Scotland, rounded off their most successful ever Games in fourth position with 19 gold, 15 silver and 19 bronze medals.

The Malaysian contingent ended their campaign in 12th position with six gold, seven silver and six bronze medals.
