Malaysia's hockey squad beat Japan 4-1 in a Group A match at Seonhak Hockey Stadium to reach the men's semi-final.

Midfielder Muhammad Firhan Ashari underlined Malaysia's intent with a field goal in the second minute.

Stung, Japan rallied and got the equaliser when Tachibana Toshiro scored form a penalty corner to make 1-1 in the 14th minute.

The joy was short-lived when midfielder Muhammad Razie Abdul Rahman scored two goals from the penalty corner in the 20th and 39th minute to make it 3-1.

Izwan Firdaus Ahmad Tajuddin wrapped the game 4-1 when he scored a field goal in the 42nd minute.

Hockey coach Arul Selvaraj said he was satisfied with the spirit and determination shown by all the players Saturday.

Meanwhile, skipper Azlan Misron said the spirit and understanding showed by all players was the key to the big win over Japan.

Malaysia will face 2010 Guangzhou Asian Games champions Pakistan in the semi-final on Sept 30.

Malaysia won the silver medal at 2010 Guangzhou Asian Games after losing to Pakistan 2-0 in the final.
