KUALA LUMPUR:The ‘political doomsday’ will happen to UMNO and DAP if the two parties work together in Perak, said a lecturer of the Department of Administrative and Political Studies, University of Malaya (UM), Dr Mohammad Tawfik Yaakob.

He is of the view that if UMNO and DAP decide to collaborate, the effect will be felt by both parties throughout the country and not only in Perak.

"If this really happens, I fear that Malay votes will run away from UMNO in GE15 and Chinese votes will run away from DAP.

"This is what I say as the ‘political doomsday’. This can happen and ruin the future of UMNO itself throughout the country and not just in Perak," he told Astro AWANI.

To avoid problems, Dr Mohammad Tawfik suggested that the relationship between UMNO and Parti Pribumi Bersatu Malaysia (Bersatu) be improved immediately.

Although Bersatu was impacted by the rejection of the motion of confidence made by UMNO assemblymen on Datuk Seri Ahmad Faizal Azumu, Dr Mohammad Tawfik believes the matter can be resolved through negotiations.

"Actually, there is no extraordinary political tension, only the rejection of the individual as Menteri Besar in Perak.

“For me, it is not anything big at the party level.

"What we see today, in the context of Malay politics, it is subsiding between UMNO and Bersatu.

“I believe this is a success for PAS as a mediator in the political clash that happened today," he said.

The political imbroglio in Perak began with Ahmad Faizal failing to win the majority support in the motion of confidence in a bloc voting by the State Assemblymen (Adun) at the DUN sitting, last Friday.

The motion, brought by Pengkalan Baharu State Assemblyman, Datuk Abd Manaf Hashim who represented UMNO, saw Ahmad Faizal managing only 10 votes in support, 48 opposing with one abstention.

Ahmad Faizal announced his resignation as Menteri Besar the following day.

However, no political party has the simple majority to form the new Perak State Government until yesterday.
