I am not too sure which news shocked me most – a Malaysian student getting caught for possessing child pornographic material or that (some) Malaysians have a soft spot for a perverted genius?

Everybody is talking about this genius, Nur Fitri Nordin who is obsessed with child porn.

Some even say that he deserves a second chance but not many ponder about the real victim – the children.

The questions that keep running in my mind until today are: Who are these children in those videos and images? Where are their parents or guardians that they are left exposed indecently? Are there any Malaysian children involved in these disturbing visuals? And how long has this been going on?

Why are we putting so much focus on saving one sick adult when we should be focusing and highlighting on the other thousands of children whose lives and future is at stake because of the demands for this innocent kids’ lewd images?

Whilst we are trying to understand one of the most stigmatized mental disorders which is paedophilia, many children around the world (as we speak) are trying to escape this sexual abuse.

The Met Police in London discovered Nur Fitri’s shocking stash that included 601 videos and images belonging to category A which is abuse involving penetrative sexual activity with children, as well as hundreds of category B and C ones, amounting to 30, 000 explicit materials of young children.

And God forbids that he has more in his stash back home.

Looking at the shocking amount of illegal child porn material in his possession, I believe that Nur Fitri has all the chance and the time in the world to repent or to seek help if he really wants to. It is a choice he could make but didn't.

And it is a given that he will have his second chance once he is done with his sentence. After the five years, he will be a free man again at the age of 28 or 29. In addition to that, according to MARA, with their consent, because he is such an asset to the nation, that he will be placed in any one of the university.

And so, why are we amplifying this whole second chance thing for this convict?

Chances are, if there’s one like Nur Fitri, there are bound to be others. Does this mean that we okayed the breeding of a secret club of paedophiles and children traffickers and sexual abusers at our very own back yard?

What most Malaysians do not understand is that child pornography is (already) a crime and here is why:

For a child porn images or videos to be produced and to exist, the children involved have already suffered a lot of abuse, sexual abuse.

They say second chances are what made us human. But how about those children in those pornographic videos and images? What are their chances of living a healthy life and safe, protected childhood? Do they have a second chance? Who is giving them that second chance? Their lives are already scarred, these children are broken and I doubt they even know the meaning of chance.

For those who really believe that the 23-year old Nur Fitri is an asset and a genius should first get their heads checked.

There are even some Malaysians who plead to take Nur Fitri as just ‘playing truant’ and deserves a second chance just because he is a genius. But is he really?

Come to think of it, It does not take a rocket scientist or a genius to know right from wrong. And this is plain downright and clear-cut wrong.

And I don’t think being in the UK has made him to become this silent monster. He was in the UK only since November 2014. That is like six months from today. How is it possible for him to have thousands and thousands of lewd child images in that short period of time unless he does nothing but just that throughout his time in uni? An asset? Really?

And since I failed to get that little truth to understand this scenario, from what I gather, my theory is that he must have started from when before he flew to the UK, when he was here (Malaysia) and probably got euphoric by his liberation, away from home and that his child porn obsession got escalated and out of control when in London. And if so, it is a choice that he made. Genius much? I don't think so.

And yes he scores As' in all his subjects, with CGPA that shoots up in the sky, a math genius, but what is so genius about not being able to control his so called mental disorders?

Would a highly intellectual person possess a weird sick liking for pre-pubescent kids? And what is so intellectual about a guy who downloaded thousands and thousands of illegal sites and pornographic materials?

What is so admirable about a guy in his early twenties with sexual fantasies of young boys and girls?

If he is really a genius, he would have known that his weird obsession with little kids is a disgrace, wrong and bad and that he would be caught. So is he really a genius or a stupid?

And so, apart from adding to the statistics of another genius that we have from this country, which part of this convict is he truly an asset?

In life sometimes, you got to be cruel to be kind. Giving a convict like Nur Fitri the leniency to pursue his studies, post jail term is not the way to teach any ‘truant’ a lesson. Easy second chance is not the way to achieve the wholesome goodness.

Even in school, when you got caught for doing anything wrong, you will be punished. It is important to instil the importance of black and white in young children. That when you have done something wrong, you must be taught a lesson.

When a student can be dismissed from any national university for taking part in any political activities, then why should we close an eye to this convict? Obviously, a paedophile is more detrimental to the society than a student with a strong political view.

So really, why the double standard? Has anyone checked his background? Is he related to any prominent figures that he can get away so easily?

And also, what if a group of Malays (namely GPMS) petitioned for a second chance for him? What if Nur Fitri is not a Malay, would there be any association defending him?

And how is it that there are people who always manage to slip in race and religion issue in every single big or small, wrong or right things that happened in this country? To this people please note that any form of abuse unto a child or to any human for that matter is WRONG in any religion and race.

Even our Prime Minister cares about the well-being of our children, so why can’t (some) of his followers see that? In his blog posting, he is firm as saying

"Nur Fitri was on trial in Britain under the laws of the country and given a chance to defend himself and he pleaded guilty. We must respect the law of the country and anyone found guilty must be punished,"

Totally agree with you Mr. PM, and so let’s talk about the law for a bit.

It just got to my attention, that we do not have a law that is exclusive to violations of children’s integrity especially when it involves sexual related activities with children or paedophiles.

Some might say, why do we need specific laws when we already have law and punishment for statutory rape? And so what if he watches some porn? He did not actually commit any physical connection with any kids. At least not that we know of.

But paedophiles don’t just get their kicks from just rape, there are a lot more than just rape or even penetration to a paedophile. And how will we know this? Can we know a paedophile or a child predator the moment we set eyes on them? No we wouldn’t. We do not even have a tracking device for paedophiles like they do in the United States. So who is to stop a paedophile from lurking around our neighbourhood? No one.

Anything about children and their well-being in this country is questionable. From the non-existent of an ideal early childhood care like babysitters, nannies and maids, to the confusing education system up to the non-existence of legislation that protects children.

Why is this so, I often wonder - just like how we don’t have law for children to be seated safely in their car seats. It is mind boggling what our priorities are, that we put in such attention and rule for tinted cars and such but none to strengthen the safety of children in automobile. (Well that’s a different story all together)

To me these lawless situations insinuate that our country does not care enough for the well-being of our children. That our moral compass is wonky and needs some serious fixing, urgently.

Children of this country, and everywhere for that matter are all (the real) valuable assets.

No matter what colour their skins are, regardless whether curly, frizzy or wavy hair, slanted eyes or round, handicap or hyperactive, they are all valuable to the nation. And they are vulnerable and in dire need of our protection.

So why are we defending their enemy? Why are we supporting the bad guy?
