Two brothers were killed and four other family members injured when a tyre burst caused a multi-purpose vehicle (MPV) they were travelling in, to skid and ram into a tree at the 143.3km East Coast Highway near Maran yesterday.

The impact caused Afif Iman Hasmady, 16, and Safiy Daniel, 13, who were rear passengers of the Toyota Innova to be thrown out of the vehicle in the 1.15pm crash.

State traffic enforcement and investigation department chief, Supt Mohamad Noor Yusof Ali said Afif Iman died on the spot while Safiy Daniel succumbed to head and body injuries while undergoing treatment at the Temerloh Hospital's emergency ward.

He said their brothers, Abid Iman, 16, and Muhammad Zulfar, two, were seriously injured and warded at the hospital.

Their parents, teachers Hasmady Che Mat, 44, and Mahani Muhammad, 43, also sought treatment for head and body injuries at the hospital.

Mohamad Noor said the incident was believed to have occurred when the left rear tyre of the MPV driven by Hasmady, burst and caused the vehicle to skid at the left road-shoulder and ram into the tree.

He said while Afif Iman and Safiy Daniel were hurled out of the vehicle, Hasmady, Mahani and the other two brothers were trapped inside.

"The trapped victims were removed from the vehicle by the public," he told Bernama here Friday. -- Bernama
